LA Vocal Booths, Cost Effective VO Vocal Booth

by Dan Lenard

A Cost effective VO vocal booth from LA Vocal Booths

Read all of this!

My philosophy has always been to use what you have at home to create a home VO studio. But many homes don’t provide the right space acoustically or have the isolation required.

One thing is clear. When looking for an isolation vocal booth, you really have to consider a few things: Price of course, customization, functionality, and portability. Fact is, You may not need a lot of isolation. If you’re in a fairly quiet place, just a reduction of 10dB can make the difference between hearing the neighbors playing basketball, or a house being built down the street, and being able to record your VO tracks.

Vocal booths were never intended for the use we, as voice actors use them for. They were invented to isolate a musician so they could practice and not disturb others around them. Internal acoustics weren’t as critical. A vocal booth for VO has to be good on the inside

I had the pleasure to examine the Isolation booths built by LA Vocal Booths! They offer a wide range of configurations, a lighter, easier to build and move structure, at a price point that will make people take notice. They are a Cost effective VO Vocal Booth choice.

They make three sizes, 4’X4’X7’, 4’X6’X7’ and 6’X6’X7’.  They come in two basic colors of black and Charcoal. However with the wood framing and doors they use, you could create any color scheme you choose.

The key to their design is 4 tightly interlocked wood panels and ceiling panel that nicely isolate the interior, making them a cost effective way to handle a over the margin noise level I described above. It could be just what you need to make that spare room a viable recording space.

The bare-bones model clearly needs interior acoustical diffusion and absorption to not sound like you’re in a box. They offer three levels of acoustical packages to handle that.

Tier 1
Acoustic Foam

Tier 2
Custom built sound panels

And Tier 3
with a combination of sound Panels and and acoustical Foam.

I will say that the acoustic foam they offer isn’t top of the line and does little to attenuate bass reflex.  However, they will put the higher end stuff in there for you if you ask for it. Just adding some Auralex Lenrd Bass traps in the ceiling corners would make a huge difference at not a lot of cost.

Their custom built acoustic wall panels are better. However at 2 inches thick, they subtract 4” of interior width from the booth. Makes it kinda tight, but not claustrophobic.

The doors are solid core metal doors and they can come with or without a double pane window. The other panels can also be built with various size windows as well. They also use premium door seals, which I know from experience makes a huge  difference in exterior noise rejection.

They also offer a premium wall package which includes 3/4″ Insulation Foam, a mass loaded Vinyl Barrier Layer and Green Glue Compounds. If you’re in place that really needs superior isolation, that should fill the bill. Their is an additional $600 cost for that.

They also have lighting and ventilation packages. However, I would recommend you can get a great booth from them without those additional features at a very reasonable price. However, if you want all that stuff and have a ready to go booth, you can do that.

The bottom line(s)?

At a base price for their base 4X4X7 model at $2495 how can you go wrong? The additional features they offer still make them lower in cost than the industry heavyweights (Figuratively and in reality)

Check out their website LAVOCALBOOTHS.com and see how you can mix and match features and sizes to fit your needs and your budget. Its a Cost effective VO Vocal Booth!

CAD E100S Large Diaphragm Supercardioid Condenser Microphone

by Dan Lenard

With the best home studio set up, silence is golden! If your a VO mic! Meaning little self-noise. You know. That hissing sound in the background of your recordings. The CADE100S large diaphragm Supercardioid condenser microphone is lauded for its extremely low self-noise. At 3.7 dBA, it puts it in the same class of quiet mics as RODE, Sennheiser/Neumann and other premium manufactures. Plus it sounds as good as a mic in a higher price point with the smooth, vintage tone and robust low end CAD is known for. The bootstrapped, full differential Quadra-FET front end delivers high sensitivity and low distortion, plus CAD’s proprietary circuitry ensures the highest performance.

The nickel (not Gold) plated 1 inch capsule delivers a full rich vocal tone, accentuated by the extended low frequency response. It also features an 80Hz hi-pass filter and a 10dB pad. Very useful tools in marginal environments.

The CAD Equitek E100S will prove to be one of the most versatile tools in your microphone locker. It comes in a vintage wood grain cherry case. As with any studio condenser,   48V Phantom power is required.

The included, very unique, stealth shock mount is integrated into the mic. Not so great if you set up your mic upside down or on a boom, as its hard to modify it to rotate freely in all directions. I built a modification that allowed me to do this. Buts its not a biggie. Its still has what you need for the for the best home studio set up. I give this mic a hefty thumbs up!
